IOF LAUNCHES ETHICS COMMITTEE
Following the ban on stem cell therapies in Canada and an increased number of clinicians offering stem cell therapies using non-FDA compliant products, the Interventional Orthopedics Foundation recognized the need to set clear ethical standards for our members.
IOF has launched an ethics committee with the goal of developing ethical standards, reporting practices and ongoing ethical education. The committee will draft an IOF statement on ethical use, branding and terminology as IOF continues to be the regenerative orthopedic industry’s leading membership organization.
Committee Members:
Committee Chair: Dr. Matthew Lucas, Centeno Schultz Clinic
Dr. Chris Rogers, San Diego Orthobiologics Medical Group
Dr. Dave Smith, Kingston Orthopedic Pain Institute, Canda
Dr. Michael Lersten, Stanford University
Dr. Kunj Patel, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School
HOW TO REPORT UNLAWFUL SALE OF MEDICAL PRODUCTS
We continue to see a disturbing number of stem cell clinics offering amniotic, umbilical cord and other non- autologous products. The FDA has established regulations that say that medical products cannot rely on cell activity for benefits. Unfortunately, we continue to see deceptive clinicians continuously refer to these treatments as stem cell treatments.
If you encounter a clinic or website illegally selling biologic products, please file an FDA report at this link.
